Dear PTA President:
I hope your school and PTA have had a great start to the new
academic year. As Co-Director for North Carolina’s Western Region Odyssey of
the Mind Program, I am writing to give you a brief update on the activities we
have planned for this year.
As
an involved parent, you may already be familiar with Odyssey of the Mind, which
teaches creative problem solving for students in kindergarten through college.
Odyssey of the Mind has proven its value by
encouraging and rewarding students for innovative thinking, risk-taking and
research. The skills children acquire in this program are carried with them
throughout their lives. Teachers have said that for many of their
students, being involved in Odyssey of the Mind has sparked a renewed interest
in their regular courses at school. And perhaps most important, students in
Odyssey of the Mind learn how to work together as a team to solve problems.
We
are already gearing up for this academic year, and it is time to begin
registering teams in our region. You will find everything you need to register
teams on our Western Region web site, http://western.ncom.org.
Our Western Region tournament will be held on March 7, 2009, at T. C.
Roberson High School.
If
your students have not participated in Odyssey of the Mind in the past, I would
encourage you to check it out. We have scheduled a
training session for Odyssey of the Mind coaches on November 1, 2008.
Individuals can register for the coaches training by contacting Barbara Parris
at (828) 586-5148 or by sending an email at barbaraparris@verizon.net.
More
information about Odyssey of the Mind is also available at our international
web site, http://odysseyofthemind.org,
and our state site, http://ncom.org.
For
your convenience, you will find more information and materials regarding
Odyssey of the Mind on the Western Region web site, along with a more detailed
schedule of events for the school year. If I can be of assistance, please call
me on (828)
299-5972, or
send e-mail to lee.crisp@hotmail.com.
Thank you for your interest and support of Odyssey of the Mind, and I hope to
see teams from your school at our spring competition.
Sincerely,
Lee Crisp,
Co-Director, Western Region – NC Odyssey of the Mind
