November 2008

Dear Colleague:

It is that time again—time for the Western Region Tournament Officials to begin recruiting judges and volunteers for the 2009 Odyssey of the Mind Western Region Tournament.  We urge you to take advantage of this stimulating opportunity to see “creativity students” work in teams as they solve problems.  The tournament will be held at T.C. Roberson High School on Saturday, March 7, 2009 (no snow date).

If you would like to be a judge, there is a judges training session to be held at the Buncombe County Board of Education on February 21, 2009 from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm (snow date February 28, 2009).  A judge must be available to judge his/her assigned problem at the tournament from 7:30 am until 4:00 pm on Saturday, March 7, 2009.  To review the long-term problem synopses and a description of the judging positions please go to this http://western.ncom.org and click on the link for judges/volunteers information.  All judges and volunteers will register online.  To accomplish this, go to the regional web site at http://western.ncom.org and follow the appropriate links.  For those of you who do not have access to the internet, a Judge’s Intent Form is available.  Please register online if at all possible.  If it is not possible, complete the Intent Form and return it Pamela Norton, Co-Regional Director, 810 N Oconeechee Avenue, Black Mountain, NC  28711.  Registered judges will receive more detailed problem descriptions, directions to the Buncombe County Board of Education, etc.

Volunteers should be available to work a block of hours or throughout the day during the tournament on Saturday, March 7, 2009.  All volunteers will be contacted prior to the tournament regarding the assigned work schedule and site location.

Please register as a judge or volunteer online by January 16, 2009 or return the Judge/Volunteer Intent Form to the address shown above by Friday, January 16, 2009.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at 828-669-7714 or email me at pamela.norton@bcsemail.org.

Thank you for your consideration to assist with the 2009 tournament.  Without judges and volunteers a tournament would not be possible.

Sincerely,

Pamela Norton, Co-Regional Director
